ABOUT THE MOVEMENT
According to the United Nations, there are nearly 1 billion people around the world who are hungry. As the world’s largest restaurant company, we believe it is our privilege and responsibility to make a difference in the lives of others less fortunate who are hungry around the globe.
In 2007 as we approached our 10th anniversary, we decided to align our system around a global crisis that we were well positioned to address – hunger relief. Yum! and our Brands had a longstanding commitment to hunger in the U.S. through our Harvest program, contributing on average $50 million worth of prepared meals to hunger relief agencies across the country each year.
To address hunger on a global scale, we created our annual World Hunger Relief effort to raise awareness, volunteerism and funds for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and other hunger relief organizations.
Today, Yum! Brands’ World Hunger Relief effort is one of the world’s largest private sector hunger relief initiative, spanning more than 125 countries and territories, with over 40,000 KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell restaurants and 1.5 million employees. Through the use of restaurant point of purchase materials, broadcast, print, online, social media, advertising and public service announcements, the campaign has grown year over year.
Multi-Grammy Award winner and international superstar Christina Aguilera is our World Hunger Relief effort’s global spokesperson and she’s featured in a new PSA this fall. The new PSA includes footage from Aguilera’s recent field visit to Rwanda where she witnessed the effects of hunger first hand and helped beneficiaries of WFP’s nutrition programs. Aguilera served food to hungry children and spent time with mothers and children at a refugee camp in Rwanda. Click here to read more about Aguilera as global spokesperson for World Hunger Relief.
Since its beginning in 2007, our World Hunger Relief effort has raised nearly $185 million for WFP and other hunger relief organizations and is helping to provide approximately 750 million meals and save the lives of millions of people in remote corners of the world. In 2012, World Food Program USA honored Aguilera and our Chairman and CEO, David Novak, at the State Department with the George McGovern Leadership Award for their hunger relief efforts.
Volunteerism is also a key component of our World Hunger Relief initiative and since 2007, 1.5 million of our employees, franchisees and their families have volunteered millions of hours to aid hunger relief efforts in communities worldwide. Our employees and franchisees volunteer their time around the globe at hunger relief agencies, food banks, soup kitchens and launch fundraisers.
Please join us in the movement to end global hunger. Every U.S. dollar raised will go directly towards WFP’s operations to fight hunger around the world. One U.S. dollar provides four meals for hungry children at school. Click here to learn more.
Together we can save lives and move people from hunger to hope.
